Energy Surcharge

An energy surcharge will be applicable for all bookings at Hotel Mocking Bird Hill as of the 01 January 2008. This energy surcharge will be invoiced to the guests directly. This will be US$ 6.00 per room per night.

Hotel Mocking Bird Hill has always operated along the guidelines for sustainable and environmentally friendly tourism. In 2007 Hotel Mocking Bird Hill undertook an energy audit and contributed to My Climate to offset the negative impact of our operations while continuing to strive to improve our environmental performance. In response to the increasing cost of energy and with the awareness that it is incumbent upon every business to reduce its carbon emissions we are now currently in the process of expanding our use of renewable energy beyond merely solar water heating, which we have used since opening almost 15 years ago. We have already installed a solar powered water landscape at the entrance of the hotel and converted our pool filtration pump to solar power. We hope to have other areas of our operations powered by solar panels by the end of this year. We look forward to converting more and more of our operations to solar power over time, thus reducing the carbon emissions produced as a result of our operations as well as being able to remove the need for the energy surcharge as soon as possible.

Our efforts to shift as fast as funds allow to a renewable form of energy and away from oil produced electricity is certainly on the one hand an economic decision. It is however first and foremost driven by our deep concern for the environment and the effects of climate change on our planet. The best case scenario would involve a paradigm shift away from the targets of the Kyoto Protocol and towards a carbon cap and putting a price on carbon and making businesses and consumers pay for their emissions providing a strong incentive to shift to renewable energies and raising trillions of dollars to be spent on a smooth transition to a low-carbon economy. This best case scenario will still result in an temperature increase of 2.89°C by 2100, dangerously above the 2°C threshold set be climate experts. This temperature rise may seem negligible, but will lead to the total disappearance of the Artic Sea, spreading deserts and water stress in the sub-tropics, extreme weather and floods and melting glaciers in the Andes and the Himalayas. We believe that these forecasts make it incumbent on us all to me the change we have to see. It may seem like a drop in the ocean for Hotel Mocking Bird Hill to shift towards renewable energy or to collect funds from you, our guests, to enable the Jamaica Conservation Development Trust to reforest the Blue Mountains, but imagine the sea of change if we each creates just one drop in the ocean.
