DRIVING INSTRUCTIONS

From Norman Manley International, Kingston, there are three scenic routes:

    • Around the eastern coast of the island, the easiest route as you do not need to drive through the city, just turn right at the second round-a-bout after the airport and you're on your way. The drive will take about 3 hours.
    • Through Kingston and then through the hills, along a river, on the beautiful but very curvy "Junction Road". This is the main road joining the south to the north and is the best road with the shortest driving time (2 - 2½ hours), but not for the faint hearted!
    • Through Kingston and over the Blue Mountains. The shortest distance, but the longest driving-time. This is a spectacular route with breathtaking views, but we don't recommend it on your first day in Jamaica or in bad weather.

    From Sangster's International, Montego Bay,

    • The drive along the coast is lovely but long (4½ - 5 hours). Make a day of it, stop on the way, see the sights, visit the Reggae Explosion at Island village in Ocho Rios, then have lunch at Toscanini's at Harmony Hall, a couple of kilometres east of Ocho Rios.

    How to get around?
    • Car Rental at Island Car Rentals , for the weary traveller you have the option of requesting a driver to drive you to Port Antonio after your long flight. Call (876-929-4429) or email icar@cwjamaica.com . Most hotels will make the arrangements for you; just give a day or two's notice, as there is no office in Port Antonio. They are convenient however because they give island wide coverage and will have the car ready for you at the airport. www.islandcarrentals.com
    • Eastern Rent-a-Car (867-993-3624) has an office at 26 Harbour Street.
    • Taxis: There are two types of taxis in Jamaica. Charters are usually operated by Sunshine Taxis (876-993-2123) or JUTA (876-993-2684) and other operators such as Attractions Link - attractionslink@cwjamaica.com
These cabs are officially licensed and insured. The other type is the shared taxi or what most Jamaicans refer to as "robots". Theses run on a regular basis as far a field as Long Bay and beyond. They have low fares. The problem with these taxis is that they are not all are licensed or fully insured and are therefore not liable if there is an accident.
