Supporting the Maroons
Hotel Mocking Bird Hill is proud of its relationships with its local communities, particularly Charles Town, famous throughout history for its anti-slavery stance.
We believe in holistically tapping into the assets and resources of our surrounding community partners. We offer activities and learning experiences to our guests that raise awareness of Jamaica's unique cultural heritage which in turns provides employment, whilst wherever possible we source local products from local suppliers helping to cut down on food miles.
Beyond creating the original 'Jerk Trail' we encourage our guests to visit our local Maroon Community in Charles Town where they can enjoy a story-led botanical hike led by the representative of the Maroons, Colonel Lumsden to the ruins of an 18th century coffee estate.
Amongst the streamer tailed humming birds, mongoose, the ever so charming Colonel traces the history of the Maroons, whose ancestors were from Ghana in West Africa have contributed so much to Jamaica’s culture. Founded by Jamaica's First Lady - 'Nanny', she led the Maroons to victory against the British and invented guerilla & camouflage warfare.

Mille Fleurs, the hotel's restaurant, our guests are able to actively support Charles Town's agri-tourism initiatives by their selection at dinner. One of the unique dishes that our Chef created is gluten-free fresh pasta made from Cassava flour, which we buy direct from its producers - the Charles Town Maroons, a long-term sustainable demand that helps build growth in the local economy.

"We hark back to the history we had before slavery and have kept these traditions going for generations. Ours is an important part of Jamaican history that should have greater recognition and acknowledgement"
