Art Classes in Jamaica
Art & Local Children
Children in rural areas often do not have the opportunity to experience and contemplate art. They are also welcomed to the gallery where they can become more aware of their rich cultural heritage and potential. Innkeeper Barbara Walker gives informal talks with the children about the work they are viewing and about their own creative aspirations. She can also help make your creative dream a reality through art classes she offers in her studio.
 Barbara Walker Biography
Barbara Walker started painting at the age of 7. She studied Fine Arts (Painting and Sculpture) at the École des Beaux Arts in Geneva, Switzerland and did a brief stint at the École de Beaux Arts in Dijon, France. She moved to Cologne, Germany in 1978 where she lived and worked as an artist until 1993.
While in Cologne she was a member of the gallery collective Galerie am Buttermarkt which organised group and individual shows of the collective’s members as well as exhibitions of the works of other young, aspiring artists. Many of the gallery’s exhibitions had political themes such as racism, and AIDS.
Barbara returned to her native Jamaica in 1993 where she has to squeeze time out of her busy schedule as one of the owner/managers of Hotel Mocking Bird Hill to continue her artistic work.
Much of her work is based around the theme of the Goddess who is the original trinity, the virgin, the mother and the crone (wise old woman) and who is the Earth, our Mother. Many of her sculptures are her visualisations of the Goddess while her paintings speak to our violation of the Earth, reflecting her strong environmentalist beliefs which are also cornerstone policies for the hotel.
Barbara sculpts in wood, soapstone, alabaster and papier maché and her paintings are usually mixed media. Prices are available on request.
